Abstract Created by REACH
The military presents challenges for couple relationships, including deployments
and separations, potential development or exacerbation of mental health concerns (such as anxiety,
depression, and posttraumatic-stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms), and emotion management strategies
used in the military career spilling over into relational interactions. Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) may
be well-suited to military couples as it focuses on strengthening relational bonds, sense of safety, and
responsiveness to each other, all of which can assist couples who are navigating the unique challenges of
military life. The authors identified specific suggestions for how to tailor EFT for couples within the military
context.
