Abstract Created by REACH
Conducted as part of the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (Army STARRS), this multi-method study examined contextual catalysts for suicide by interviewing 89 Soldiers who survived a recent suicide attempt. Soldiers were asked to describe the reasons why they attempted suicide, the events leading up to their attempt, and their subsequent outcomes. Overall, most Soldiers attempted suicide to escape mental health symptoms; however, relationship- and work-related stress also contributed to Soldiers’ decisions to attempt suicide.
