Participation in inclusive sports and recreation programming is a promising approach for improving outcomes for youth with developmental disabilities. This review overviews common barriers faced by participants and their families, and identifies thirteen key components of successful inclusive sports and recreation programs. Best practices for adapting the physical and institutional environment as well as instructional styles and program activities to meet the needs of youth with developmental disabilities are described.
Research summaries convey terminology used by the scientists who authored the original research article; some terminology may not align with the federal government's mandated language for certain constructs.
