Abstract Created by REACH
This scoping review summarized 69 peer-reviewed articles focused on the relationship between positive social support and Veteran women’s mental and physical health. Positive social support was conceptualized as “psychological and material resources intended to benefit an individual’s ability to cope with stress.” For each article, the sample, methodology, measures, and key findings related to positive social support were extracted, reviewed, and summarized. Overall, social connections were an important resource for Veteran women, particularly benefiting their mental health. However, the ability to draw strong conclusions from the results was limited due to inconsistency in how positive social support was defined and measured across the studies.
