Military REACH Project Manager
Sean Lucas is a Research and Outreach intern for the Military REACH project. He is an undergraduate student in Human Development and Family Studies with a focus on middle adolescence. He has been working with our team this summer and has already added over 200 terms to the REACH Dictionary, developed an advertisement for our social media pages, and has been actively working to grow our research database. Our team members describe Sean as eager, friendly, “willing to help whenever and however needed,” and “a hard worker, kind, and honest while assisting you.” Continue reading to learn more about Sean, ranging from the skills he is currently working on to his hobbies outside of the lab.

1. What is your long-term professional goal?

I would like to be a middle school counselor so I can work with adolescents and be a resource to help them through difficult situations.

2. How did you learn about Military REACH, and what interested you in working with the project?

I learned about Military REACH through Dr. Lucier-Greer and was interested in the project due to my family's previous involvement with the military. My aunt was a drill sergeant in the Army, and my cousin is currently serving in the Marines. Military REACH piqued my interest in seeing how I could support my family. My grandfather was also in the Navy, and I looked up to him regarding his strength of character from his time serving.

3. What are your primary tasks with the Military REACH project?

My primary tasks are to work on the Military REACH Dictionary, within Zotero, and add entries to the REACH Library. My role is to ensure that the information on our website is comprehensive and accurate, and that our target audiences can find what they need on our website.

4. What has been your favorite task while working with Military REACH?

My favorite task has been working on the REACH Dictionary. I enjoy working with words and learning new terms; therefore, the task was almost like a second nature thing for me, and it naturally seemed to fit into what I already enjoy doing.

5. What is one professional skill you are currently working on?

A skill I'm currently working on is time management. I tend to work on one thing, then move on to the next, and so on. That’s rarely how life works out however, so a helpful technique I’ve been using to improve my time management is categorizing different time allocations for different projects.

6. What is one thing you are learning while working with Military REACH?

One thing I'm learning is how to handle multiple tasks at once, and how to work on multiple projects simultaneously. This is not something that comes naturally to me, as I tend to try and focus on one thing at a time and move on from there. Given the way the modern workforce is, and the need for balancing multiples tasks at once, I am continuing to strengthen those skills.

7. If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?

I would be an expert in how to buy things for the cheapest prices.

8. What are some of your hobbies?

My hobbies are playing video games, hiking, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. A fun fact about me is that I am the Dungeon Master (DM) for the Dungeons and Dragons game I play.
